Tai Chi Styles

There are many different stories about the origins of tai chi and the different styles. This is the truth as far as I have been told.

I will tell you a little about  the styles of tai chi that I teach.

Sun Style

Sun style is the youngest of the major Tai Chi chuan styles. It was created by Sun Lu-Tang (1861-1932). Sun Lu-Tang was a master of Xingyi chuan and Baqua quan (two other internal matial arts) before he trained in Tai Chi. Sun tyle has a combination of Xingyi chuan, Baqua quan and Wu style Tai Chi movements.

Sun style is a good style to start with when you begin studying Tai Chi. The stance is higher than most other styles of Tai Chi, which is good for people with knee problems. It also has a lot of qi gong built into the form which is effective for healing and relaxation.

Yang Style

Yang style Tai Chi is probably the most popular style. It was created by Yang Lu-Chan (1799-1872) who created his own style after mastering Chen style Tai Chi.

Yang Style is a good style for anyone. Though some of the stances are quite low, they can be modified for your individual circumstances.

Chen Style

Chen style Tai Chi was created by Chen Wang-Ting in 1670. Chen was influenced by a famous general and the teachings of Taoism.

This style is good for advanced students. There are a lot of low stances and explosive movements.
